Many of us are struggling with disbelief in the new reality. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One more new reality.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Just as we thought, we are heading back to old normal &#8211; to one where the world is a safe place for us to be. Where the borders are open and remote places are reachable, where people were simply living their lives without fear of their existence, that world where life was easy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When composing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/peero.app\/en\/blog\/employee-experience-trends-for-2022\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the employee experience trend article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we mentioned DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) as a slowly uprising trend for 2022. Little did we know that the events of the world would push the importance of DEI to such heights in such a short period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what exactly is DEI, and why is it important? The first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.15five.com\/blog\/diversity-equity-and-inclusion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">answer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that pops up when this question is asked to Google is: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put, reinforcing robust DEI programs <\/span><\/i><b><i>helps every employee to show up each day without fear of being their true selves.<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This fosters higher engagement, productivity, and innovation that contribute to increased revenue. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We won\u2019t emphasise the importance of employee engagement or productivity, at least not this time. Instead, let\u2019s dig deeper into the acronym and get a fuller picture of its meaning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Diversity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dei.extension.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DEI Extension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides simple yet explanatory images; we\u2019ll use them to visualise the topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4377\" src=\"https:\/\/peero.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/MicrosoftTeams-image-120-300x70.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"437\" height=\"102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peero.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/MicrosoftTeams-image-120-300x70.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peero.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/MicrosoftTeams-image-120-768x180.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peero.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/MicrosoftTeams-image-120.jpg 902w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversity refers to the <\/span><b>presence of differences.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They may include differences in opinions, skills, knowledge, education, race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, and many more. For society to grow and develop, it needs to be diverse &#8211; only then we can be innovative and evolve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Equity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result of equity is when all members of a diverse society are given tools that equally supports their goals. The visualisation below illustrates it wonderfully; unfortunately, it is not as straightforward as it looks.
